Mri-histology Registration in Prostate Cancer
نویسندگان
چکیده
PC detection requires a digital rectal exam and a Prostatic Specific Antigen screening. The diagnosis is confirmed by pathological analysis of systematic needle core biopsy. Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) is currently used to guide this prostate sampling. In the 12pattern protocol, twelve different transrectal ultrasound-guided biopsies are routinely performed: 6 biopsies in each side of the prostate, which are paired in the apex, the mid and base regions of the prostate. The positive detection rate for the first biopsy series is about 20-30% [8]. For optimal therapy, the precise localization and staging of PC is critical; indeed it allows the urologist to adjust his treatment in order to either cure the patient or extend his life span while limiting therapeutic adverse events. An early diagnosis of localized PC will result in a surgical procedure (radical prostatectomy) or radiotherapy. Moreover, with the emergence of disease-targeted therapy such as interstitial brachytherapy, intensitymodulated radiotherapy, and high intensity focused ultrasound, the assessment of PC localization and extent has become an important consideration in treatment selection and planning.

Elastic registration of multimodal prostate MRI and histology via multiattribute combined mutual information.
PURPOSE By performing registration of preoperative multiprotocol in vivo magnetic resonance (MR) images of the prostate with corresponding whole-mount histology (WMH) sections from postoperative radical prostatectomy specimens, an accurate estimate of the spatial extent of prostate cancer (CaP) on in vivo MR imaging (MRI) can be retrospectively established. This could allow for definition of qu...
متن کاملDevelopment of a registration framework to validate MRI with histology for prostate focal therapy.
PURPOSE Focal therapy has been proposed as an alternative method to whole-gland treatment for prostate cancer when aiming to reduce treatment side effects. The authors recently validated a radiobiological model which takes into account tumor location and tumor characteristics including tumor cell density, Gleason score, and hypoxia in order to plan optimal dose distributions for focal therapy. ...
متن کاملImproving supervised classification accuracy using non-rigid multimodal image registration: Detecting Prostate Cancer
Computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems for the detection of cancer in medical images require precise labeling of training data. For magnetic resonance (MR) imaging (MRI) of the prostate, training labels define the spatial extent of prostate cancer (CaP); the most common source for these labels is expert segmentations. When ancillary data such as whole mount histology (WMH) sections, which provi...
متن کاملOptimization of clinical target volume delineation using magnetic resonance spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) in 3D conformal radiotherapy of prostate cancer
Background: For the purpose of individual clinical target volume assessment in radiotherapy of prostate cancer, MRSI was used as a molecular imaging modality with MRI and CT images. Materials and Methods: The images of 20 prostate cancer patients were used in this study. The MR and MRSI images were registered with CT ones using non-rigid registration technique. The CT based planning (BP), CT/MR...
متن کاملSU-E-J-95: Towards Optimum Boundary Conditions for Biomechanical Model Based Deformable Registration Using Intensity Based Image Matching for Prostate Correlative Pathology.
PURPOSE Deformable registration of histology to MRI is an essential tool to validate in vivo prostate cancer imaging. However, direct registration of histology to in vivo MR is prone to error due to geometric differences between the tissue sections and the in vivo imaging planes. To increase the accuracy of registration, an ex vivo high resolution MRI is acquired to compensate for the direct re...
متن کاملStatistical 3D prostate imaging atlas construction via anatomically constrained registration
Statistical imaging atlases allow for integration of information from multiple patient studies collected across different image scales and modalities, such as multi-parametric (MP) MRI and histology, providing population statistics regarding a specific pathology within a single canonical representation. Such atlases are particularly valuable in the identification and validation of meaningful im...
